UAE Prepares for First Legal Casino in Ras Al Khaimah

The United Arab Emirates is gearing up for the opening of its first legal casino, located in Ras Al Khaimah, as Wynn Resorts prepares to launch its Al Marjan Island resort. This marks a significant shift for the UAE, where gambling has historically been prohibited.

Gaming Suppliers Secure Licenses

Several companies are now licensed to supply gaming equipment and technology to the upcoming casino. The General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA), established in 2023, has been issuing vendor licenses since last October. Among the approved suppliers are:

  • Konami Gaming: Known for its random number generator slot machines and casino management systems.
  • Light & Wonder: Provides slot machines, online gaming content, and table game equipment.
  • Novomatic: An Austrian manufacturer of gaming cabinets and back-end systems.
  • IGT: A US-based company that manufactures gaming cabinets and back-end systems.
  • TCSJohnHuxley: A UK-based provider of live-dealer equipment, including roulette wheels and gaming tables.
  • Aristocrat: An Australian company specializing in digital slot machines.

“Securing a licence from the GCGRA is an important milestone… as we enter one of the most anticipated new regulated markets in the world,” – Matt Wilson, chief executive.

Al Marjan Island Resort: A Game Changer

The 47-story Wynn Al Marjan Island resort is projected to open in 2027 and is the only officially confirmed casino project in the UAE. Projections estimate annual gross gaming revenue of $1 billion to $1.7 billion from the resort, based on a potential UAE market size of up to $5 billion.

Ras Al Khaimah Hospitality Sector Booming

The upcoming casino resort is expected to significantly boost the hospitality sector in Ras Al Khaimah. The Al Marjan casino resort is anticipated to attract up to 6 million visitors annually, driving demand for hotels, short-term rentals, and supporting infrastructure.

Increased Hospitality Investment

Several hospitality companies are investing in the region, including Four Seasons, Nikki Beach, and Hard Rock International, which has announced plans for a hotel near the Wynn resort.

The opening of the casino is expected to have a significant impact on the region’s economy and tourism industry.
