Following the debut of the groundbreaking spherical entertainment venue in Las Vegas, plans are underway to construct a second Sphere in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi has announced an agreement to bring the unique entertainment experience to the Middle East. The agreement outlines that Abu Dhabi will cover the construction costs and pay annual fees for artistic and creative content.
Specific financial details and the precise location of the project within Abu Dhabi have not yet been disclosed.
The original Sphere in Las Vegas, a $2.3 billion project, opened its doors in 2023. This state-of-the-art venue features a high-resolution LED screen that partially encloses the space, accommodating up to 17,500 people. It has hosted concerts and sporting events within its massive spherical structure, which stands 111 meters tall and 157 meters wide.
Previous attempts to expand the Sphere concept internationally have faced obstacles. A proposal to build one in London was rejected by Mayor Sadiq Khan due to concerns about light pollution and other potential issues.
Abu Dhabi is actively working to establish itself as a distinct travel destination, separate from neighboring Dubai. This project is part of a broader strategy to attract tourists and diversify its entertainment offerings.
The UAE is also preparing to open its first casino. While the initial casino is currently under construction in Ras Al Khaimah, further developments are anticipated across the country.
“The Abu Dhabi Sphere promises to be a significant addition to the region’s entertainment landscape, offering a unique and innovative experience for visitors.”
